Referral letters to see a specialist are generally valid for 12 months and Medicare legislation dictates that you must obtain one prior to your specialist appointment. It is a practice policy that referral to a specialist will always require a consultation with your doctor. Under no circumstances can referrals be backdated as it is illegal for a doctor to do so.
Under rare circumstances (for example, longterm follow up with the same specialist for a chronic disease) your usual doctor may be able to write a referral to your specialist without an appointment, in these situations we offer an online service for patients to request a repeat referral. This will attract a fee of $30 and 3 working days notice is required.
